Wine Tasting: 7 Must-Carry Items

"Just the simple act of tasting a glass of wine is its own event. You're not downing a glass of wine in the midst of doing something else." - David Hyde Pierce, actor

Enthusiastic about attending a wine-tasting event but don't know what to take along? Here's your check list:

Pen and notepad: You will obviously be taking notes while tasting, so you'd need these first. If you're more comfortable typing, keep your smartphone or tablet handy.

Water: Irrespective of whether or not there's water at the venue, always carry a bottle of H2O from home. It cleanses your palate, prevents dehydration and keeps body temperature in check.

Camera: Preserve your wine-tasting experiences not just in writing but also in pictures. Make sure the battery's fully charged and the lens is clean before you put the camera in your bag. If you think it would be difficult for you to take notes and click pictures at the same time, ask a friend or family member to accompany you. One of you can take notes, while the other can be the photographer.

Medicines: If it's your first time wine tasting, you will need to take some precautions too. Pack in some medicines, especially an antacid or a bottle of soda, depending on your doctor's prescription. First aid is always better than no aid.

Cash: Maybe the wine tasting is free, but if you're aiming to bring a few bottles home, you will definitely need it (unless you win one in a contest). Also, there's the food and the commute to be paid for.

Carry bags: To bring wine bottles home.

Sommelier apps: If you're doing the wine tasting on your own, try apps such as Hello Vino, especially if you're unsure of where to start.
